Ben Carson - Student Success Statement

  • Born in the slums of Detroit, in deep poverty
  • His mother and father divorced
  • His mother came from a family of 24 children
  • His mother couldn't read
  • His mother raised Ben and his brother, Curtis
  • Ben was the worst student in his grade school class
  • Ben becomes top student in his school
  • Ben becomes a world renowned doctor

“I hated poverty. Poverty is more of a choice than anything else, and I can change that (poverty).it depends upon how hard I want to work and I decided that I would change it.”
- Dr.Ben Carson
Reflection:
I understand the determination that he had, because there was a point in my life as well in which I suddenly felt a burst of inspiration to change things, to learn things, and it is those kinds of people that act upon their motivation to muster up the enthusiasm to move forward in life. I find it very incredible how someone that was doing so horribly in class could move up so much, and it's thanks to education, it is thanks to a longing to do better.

“You can’t be right by doing wrong; you can’t be wrong by doing right.”
-Thomas S. Monson

Reflection:
I think that there are different ways to look at this. Although, universally, this would usually be believed as correct, I'm sure there are instances which are exempt from this quote. I remember watching an anime called "Death Note", where a man used a notebook with mysterious powers to kill criminals all around the world. He had a noble purpose, but the way he went about fulfilling his purpose was wrong. You can be right by doing wrong, just as you can be wrong by doing right, but it depends on the situation, not about the intent, but about looking out for the greater good. If doing something wrong benefits mankind, wouldn't we do it? If doing something right led to the downfall of us all, is it still right? There was a quote I once heard, "The good of the many outweighs the good of the one", and I think it can apply to this.

Eastern Medicine Doctor

Duties and Responsibilities:
Eastern medicine doctors offer a variety of alternative treatments. This title can be applicable to acupuncturists, herbalists, massage therapists, etc.

Salary:
The earnings information is not currently available. Although I believe that it is safe to assume that the annual income for eastern medicine doctors depends heavily on how successful one's clinic is.

Education:
There are 38 states that require licensing or certification. The remainder of the states either don't allow eastern medicine doctors, or require a physician to be involved.

Reflection:
I don't find the idea of eastern medicine particularly stimulating, although I would like to visit the east, I'm just not sure that I would want to pursue that kind of specialty in the medical field. I'm very picky about the kind of doctor I would like to be, and unless it's something that completely intrigues me, I doubt that I would be willing to study something as mundane-sounding as eastern medicine.

“Enthusiasm makes the difference”

Reflection:
I think that this is particularly accurate, and it never really occurred to me, but this is very true. Without drive, without motivation, without enthusiasm, you'll never accomplish anything. You have to be determined to do something, to make a change, in order to do so. If you don't care, then you'll never find a reason to work so hard. People that have a reason to try, are the people that try the hardest.

“I wasn't trying to leave a legacy. I was trying to do what was right.”
-Dean Smith

Reflection:
I suppose the people that have success maybe aren't expecting that they'll leave some kind of legacy in their midst, or aren't really aspiring for that, and yet, by doing what's right. they do. I admire his methods of coaching. Letting everybody get a chance to play is something that most coaches would probably not do, since favoritism tends to play a big part when coaching.

Fitness Trainers

Duties and Responsibilities:
Fitness trainers and instructors lead, instruct, and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching.

Salary:
The median annual wage for fitness trainers and instructors was $31,720 in May 2012, approx. $15.25 per hour.

Education:
Almost all trainers and instructors have at least a high school diploma before entering the occupation, although many employers require fitness workers to have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree related to a health or fitness field

Reflection:
I'm not particularly interested in this job. I just needed a career pathway to do this page on, and (unfortunately) became a little pressed on time since I was striving to find a job that I'd be genuinely interested in. However, I like the idea of being fit enough in the future to be training others.

Student Success Statement

“It’s not about how to achieve your dreams. It’s about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma (Destiny, fortune, good luck) will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.”

- Dr. Randy Pausch

Reflection:
I think that some people are never really able to achieve their dreams, but in aspiring to do so, they live fulfilled lives. And I believe in this almost as much as the next person. I may not ever become the person I want to be, but I know I'll die trying. That's all I know for sure.

Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Doctor

Duties and Responsibilities:
An ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT) is a physician trained in the medical and surgical treatment of the ears, nose throat, and related structures of the head and neck.

Salary:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an average income of $184,650 for all physicians and surgeons regardless of their specialty in its May 2011 statistics

Education:
An ENT specialist is ready to start practicing after up to 15 years of college and postgraduate training. One must pass the four standard years of college and at least 5 years of specialty training, as well as pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examination to be certified
Otolaryngologists deal with throat, ear and nose problems, from cosmetic issues to cancers.

Reflection:
I think that I wouldn't really want to be an ENT doctor because of all the time it takes to qualify to become one. It's way too much work, and takes too much time to study to become an ENT doctor. I know that I'd like to have a stable career established at a young age, but the way I see it, I won't have established my career until I'm (at the very least) thirty. I'd rather pursue a career that genuinely interests me and that doesn't take so many years to study for.

IPhone 5s Tips

I currently own an IPhone 5s and I found some phone tips that I'd like to share:

You can have your text read back to you

iPhone can read text out loud in apps like Mail, Safari, Messages, and iBooks. Just turn on Speak Screen in Settings > General > Accessibility. Then go to the app, swipe down from the top with two fingers, or just tell Siri to Speak Screen, and have all the content of the page read back to you.

Turn on VoiceOver

The VoiceOver screen reader allows you to navigate and interact with your iOS device even if you can’t see it. You can turn on VoiceOver in Settings > General > Accessibility.

Draw letters instead of typing

With VoiceOver, you can draw letters on the screen and have them translated to text in Mail, Notes, and other applications.

Change the dialect for VoiceOver

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Languages You can change the dialect of VoiceOver on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch so it’s easier to understand. Just & Dialects.

Adjust fonts to your preferred reading size in all apps that support Dynamic Type. Simply turn on Larger Type in Settings > General > Accessibility. Then choose your desired font size.

Get flashing alerts

Your iPhone can give you a visual alert for incoming calls and texts. Just go to Settings > General > Accessibility and turn on LED Flash for Alerts.

Current Event

A sympathizer of ISIS was arrested in Ohio on Wednesday after officials discovered that he had been planning a shooting and bombing of the US Capitol.

This article regarding the Islamic terror group that has led to so many cruel deaths, and the fact that there are sympathizers within the US boundaries is something very perturbing. My opinion on this event is that we are prone to being subjected to another terrorist act akin to the 9/11 occurrence that happened just over a decade ago.

In light of recent events, I think that the US should take aggressive action against these terrorists, to put them down indefinitely, so that these atrocious acts of systematic murder will cease to be condoned. Sympathizers should be detected and searched thoroughly. If things like these go on, it'll only encourage more terrorism. The law needs to be enforced.

I may be talking like I know everything about this, but I wrote my opinion based on what little I do know. That's all.

"Every time that I've done something that doesn't feel right, it has ended up not being right."

Reflection:
I've had experiences like this before. I've done things that didn't feel right, and come to the realization that they really weren't right, at all. However, this doesn't apply to me 100% of the time, because I've done things in the past that I was completely aware weren't right, and did them anyway, and felt no remorse in the aftermath. I can't trust my gut to always notify me when I'm doing something bad, because if there's no remorse, then there's no guilt.

Electrocardiograph Technician

Duties and Responsibilities:
Electrocardiograph technicians operate special imaging equipment to create images or conduct tests. The images and test results help physicians assess and diagnose medical conditions. Some technologists assist physicians and surgeons during surgical procedures.
Salary:
The median annual wage for electrocardiograph technicians was $52,070 in May 2012.
Education:
Associate’s degrees are the entry level educational requirement to become an electrocardiograph technician.

Reflection:
I'm not particularly a fan of joining a career that I've never even really considered for myself. I don't think I want to spend my time sticking things on people's chests. I'd rather pursue a different career with a higher income as well, since $52,070 seems like a pretty low annual wage for what I want to aspire for.

"Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education."

- M.L. King JR

Reflection:
I think that this is very true and I agree wholeheartedly. To be educated is much more than simply being a knowledgable person with academic prowess. True education is being able to speak as a person who sees things with an open mind. That is intelligence, that is character.

Registered Dietician

Duties and Responsibilities

Dietitians and nutritionists are experts in food and nutrition. They advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal.

Salary

The median annual wage for dietitians and nutritionists was $55,240 in May 2012.

Education

Most dietitians and nutritionists have a bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management, clinical nutrition, or a related area. Programs include courses in nutrition, psychology, chemistry, and biology.
Many dietitians and nutritionists also have advanced degrees.

Dietitians and nutritionists

Reflection

I'm not particularly interested in becoming a dietitian, I feel like I'm more prone to visiting a dietitian than to aspiring to become one. There's a lot of different things I'd like to be, and as much as I value maintaining a good diet, I know I'd be a walking talking hypocrite if I went around telling people to eat healthy when I myself strongly dislike the idea of warping my diet to the ideal food pyramid the government provides.
